Why Families Train Differently at McKinstry Family Karate
Strong Families. Confident Individuals. One Dojang.
At McKinstry Family Karate, we believe martial arts is one of the most rewarding activities a family can share.
However, after years of teaching, we discovered something important.
The best way for families to train together isn't necessarily by placing everyone in the same class.
Instead, we've built a family training model that allows every member of the family to learn in the environment best suited to their age, experience and stage of development—while still sharing the same journey together.
Every Family Trains Together—Just Not Always in the Same Class
Young children learn differently from teenagers.
Teenagers develop differently from adults.
Rather than asking everyone to adapt to one class, we adapt our teaching to each stage of life.
That means every student receives coaching designed specifically for them while remaining part of one school community.
Our Family Training Pathway
Little Dragons (Ages 3–6)
A fun introduction to martial arts that develops:

As children grow, training becomes more structured with increasing emphasis on:
Traditional Tang Soo Do
Fitness
Focus
Character
Goal setting
Leadership
Adults Class (Teens & Adults)
Our dedicated adults programme provides a welcoming environment for complete beginners and experienced martial artists alike.
Training includes:
Traditional Tang Soo Do
Practical self-defence

Pad work
Partner drills
Confidence
Stress relief
One Family. One Journey.
Many of our parents begin training after watching their children.
Others start together.
Some families attend on the same evening, with children in Little Dragons or Junior Champions before or after the Adults Class.
Although everyone trains in the programme that's right for them, they still share the same school, the same instructors, the same values and the same achievements.
That's what family martial arts means at McKinstry Family Karate.
Why This Works
We've found this approach creates:
Better coaching
Better progression
Greater confidence
Stronger adult classes
Happier children
More enjoyable family participation
Every student receives the attention appropriate to their age while families continue to encourage one another throughout their martial arts journey.
