What Happens at Your First Karate Class?
What Happens at Your First Karate Class?
Starting something new is exciting, but it's perfectly normal to feel a little nervous too.
Whether you're considering karate for yourself or your child, you may be wondering:
What happens in the first lesson?
Will everyone else already know what they're doing?
What should we wear?
Will we have to spar?
How does membership work?
At McKinstry Family Karate, every student begins exactly the same way — with a friendly, no-pressure introduction to traditional Tang Soo Do.
Our aim is simple: to help every new student feel welcome, comfortable and confident from the moment they walk through the door.
Your Free Introductory Lesson
Every new student starts with a free introductory lesson.
This allows you to experience the class, meet the instructors and decide whether McKinstry Family Karate is the right fit for you or your family.
There is no pressure, no obligation and no expectation that you'll know anything before you arrive.
Everyone starts as a beginner.
A Warm Welcome
When you arrive, one of our instructors will greet you and answer any questions you may have.
We'll introduce you to the class and explain how the lesson works before training begins.
You'll quickly discover that our students are friendly, supportive and remember exactly what it felt like to be new themselves.
What Should I Wear?
There's no need to buy a martial arts uniform before your first lesson.
Simply wear:
Comfortable sports clothing
A T-shirt
Tracksuit bottoms or shorts
Bring a bottle of water
Training takes place barefoot on specialist martial arts mats.
If you decide to continue after your introductory lesson, we'll explain everything else you need.
Do I Need Any Experience?
Absolutely not.
Most of our students join with no previous martial arts experience whatsoever.
Our instructors explain every technique clearly and demonstrate everything step by step.
You'll never be expected to perform something you haven't been taught.
What Will I Learn?
Your first lesson introduces some of the fundamental principles of Tang Soo Do.
Depending on your age group, you may learn:
Basic stances
Simple punches
Basic kicks
Blocking techniques
Balance and coordination
Martial arts etiquette
Respect and discipline
Everything is taught at a pace that's suitable for complete beginners.
Will We Be Sparring?
No.
Your first lesson is designed to build confidence and help you become comfortable with the basics.
As students progress through the syllabus, they are gradually introduced to controlled sparring under close instructor supervision.
Safety is always our highest priority.
Age-Specific Classes
One of the biggest differences at McKinstry Family Karate is our Family Training Pathway.
Many martial arts schools place parents and children into the same class.
We don't.
Instead, every student trains with others of a similar age and stage of development.
Our programmes include:
Little Dragons (Ages 3–6)
Designed to develop:
Listening skills
Coordination
Balance
Confidence
Respect
Following instructions
Learning is active, engaging and age appropriate.
Junior Champions (Ages 6–12)
Students begin learning traditional Tang Soo Do while developing:
Confidence
Self-defence
Discipline
Fitness
Respect
Resilience
Lessons become progressively more technical while remaining enjoyable and supportive.
Adults & Teenagers
Our adult classes focus on:
Traditional Tang Soo Do
Self-defence
Fitness
Flexibility
Practical application
Personal development
Whether you're 16 or 60+, you're welcome to begin your martial arts journey.
Everyone Learns Differently
Every student develops at their own pace.
Some pick up techniques very quickly.
Others benefit from more repetition and practice.
Neither is better.
Our instructors adapt their coaching while maintaining consistent standards for every student.
Our goal isn't simply to teach techniques.
It's to help every student become more confident, capable and resilient.
What Happens If I Enjoy It?
If you decide McKinstry Family Karate is right for you, the next step is our 6-Week Kickstart Programme.
This gives new students the opportunity to settle into training, learn the fundamentals of Tang Soo Do and become part of the club.
The programme includes:
Six weeks of structured training
Your official Tang Soo Do uniform (Dobok)
Coaching from qualified instructors
A clear introduction to our syllabus and class structure
By the end of the six weeks, you'll have a good understanding of how our classes work and whether you'd like to continue your martial arts journey.
Monthly Membership
After successfully completing the Kickstart Programme, students move onto one of our monthly memberships.
We also offer excellent value family membership options, allowing parents and children to train together while still benefiting from our age-specific classes.
Our aim is to provide a clear pathway from your very first lesson through to Black Belt and beyond.
More Than Learning to Kick and Punch
Tang Soo Do teaches far more than physical techniques.
Every lesson encourages students to develop:
Respect
Discipline
Integrity
Courage
Perseverance
Community
These values are central to everything we teach.
