How to Choose a Martial Arts School: Safety, Standards and Earning Your Belt

Choosing a martial arts school for yourself or your child is an important decision.

Every martial arts school is different. They may teach different styles, follow different grading systems and have different philosophies about how students should progress.

As a parent or prospective student, it can sometimes be difficult to know what questions to ask.

Rather than looking for the quickest route to a black belt or the most impressive social media videos, we believe there are some far more important questions.

• Is the school professionally insured?

• Are instructors trained and supported?

• What safeguarding procedures are in place?

• Are gradings based on genuine ability?

• Is there any independent oversight?

• Will my child be encouraged to develop confidence, discipline and resilience as well as martial arts skills?

At McKinstry Family Karate, we believe these questions deserve honest and transparent answers.

Our goal has never been simply to teach people how to punch and kick.

Our goal is to help children and adults become more confident, disciplined and capable through traditional Tang Soo Do.

Earning Your Belt in Tang Soo Do

One of the first questions we are asked is:

"How long does it take to earn a black belt?"

The honest answer is...

There is no fixed timetable.

Every student develops at their own pace.

At McKinstry Family Karate, belts are earned through consistent training, commitment, technical ability and personal development—not simply by attending classes for a certain length of time or paying grading fees.

The Journey from White Belt to Midnight Blue Belt

Every student begins as a White Belt.

As their knowledge, confidence and ability develop, they progress through the following grades:

• White Belt

• Yellow Belt

• Orange Belt

• Orange Stripe

• Green Belt

• Green First Stripe

• Green Second Stripe

• Red Belt

• Red First Stripe

• Red Second Stripe

• Cho Dan Bo (Black Belt Candidate)

• 1st Dan (Midnight Blue Belt)

Each belt represents another stage of learning and personal growth.

Students are developing far more than physical techniques.

They are learning self-control, perseverance, respect, resilience and confidence.

Progress Is Earned, Not Automatic

McKinstry Family Karate normally holds gradings once every four months, giving students up to three grading opportunities each year.

However, a grading opportunity is not an automatic promotion.

Students are invited to grade only when they have consistently demonstrated the required standard through:

• Regular attendance

• Technical competence

• Knowledge of the syllabus

• Fitness and physical development

• Positive attitude

• Respect for others

• Consistent effort

Simply paying a grading fee does not guarantee promotion.

Every belt must be earned.

If a student needs more time to develop, we continue helping them until they are genuinely ready.

Our aim is not to produce belts quickly.

Our aim is to produce capable martial artists and confident people.

As Students Progress, Expectations Increase

As students approach Black Belt, the standards become progressively higher.

Minimum time requirements include:

• Red Belt → Red First Stripe: minimum 4 months

• Red First Stripe → Red Second Stripe: minimum 8 months

• Red Second Stripe → 1st Dan: minimum 12 months

These are minimum times only.

Students must also demonstrate the required technical standard, maturity, commitment and character before they will be invited to attempt the next grade.

Quality always comes before speed.

Why Tang Soo Do Uses a Midnight Blue Belt

Many people expect a Black Belt to be... black.

Traditional Tang Soo Do is different.

Our 1st Dan belt is Midnight Blue.

This reflects one of the most important philosophies within the art.

Black is often associated with completion or mastery.

Tang Soo Do teaches something very different.

Achieving 1st Dan is not the end of the journey.

It is the beginning of a deeper understanding of the art.

The Midnight Blue Belt symbolises:

• The limitless night sky and endless opportunities for learning.

• Humility and lifelong improvement.

• The transition from learning techniques to truly studying the art.

• The responsibility to lead by example and help others grow.

A Midnight Blue Belt is not a finishing line.

It is the start of a new chapter.

Independent Standards and External Oversight

McKinstry Family Karate is an independent martial arts school.

However, we do not operate in isolation.

We believe students and parents should have confidence that their school follows recognised standards for coaching, safeguarding and grading.

What is BMABA?

The British Martial Arts & Boxing Association (BMABA) is one of the UK's leading independent martial arts associations.

BMABA supports schools through:

What is the Lifetime Student Grading Register (LSGR)?

The Lifetime Student Grading Register (LSGR) provides independent verification and permanent recording of student grades.

Its purpose is to help preserve the integrity of every student's achievements by providing:

• Independent grading verification

• Permanent grading records

• External oversight

• Traceable rank progression

• Protection against lost or disputed grading records

Every student's martial arts journey can therefore be independently verified.

Are Our Gradings Independently Verified?

Yes.

Our Tang Soo Do syllabus has been reviewed and approved through the Lifetime Student Grading Register process.

Student gradings are submitted for independent verification and ratification, providing an additional level of accountability and consistency.
