Why Junior Champions Is More Than Just a Karate Class
Traditional Tang Soo Do Is the Journey
When many parents think about karate, they imagine children learning punches, kicks and self-defence.
Those skills are certainly part of what we teach.
But at McKinstry Family Karate, our Junior Champions programme is about much more than learning martial arts techniques.
It is about learning traditional Tang Soo Do.
Tang Soo Do is the vehicle through which children develop confidence, discipline, resilience, respect and character.
As students become better martial artists, they naturally become more confident young people.
The two journeys happen together.
A Traditional Martial Art With a Purpose
Tang Soo Do was founded by Hwang Kee in 1945 and has always been about more than physical techniques. He believed martial arts should be a lifelong journey of personal development, where technical skill and character grow together.
At McKinstry Family Karate, we continue that philosophy.
Our aim is not simply to teach children how to kick and punch.
Our aim is to help them become respectful, disciplined, resilient and capable young people through the practice of traditional Tang Soo Do.
We believe Traditional Tang Soo Do is the journey. As students become better martial artists, they naturally develop confidence, discipline, resilience and character along the way.
Building Martial Arts Skills
Junior Champions learn genuine Tang Soo Do from a structured syllabus.
As they progress, students develop:
Strong fundamental techniques
Powerful kicking skills
Effective hand techniques
Traditional Forms (Hyung)
One-Step Sparring
Self-defence
Controlled sparring
Balance and coordination
Fitness and flexibility
Every lesson builds upon the previous one, helping students steadily improve their technical ability.
Martial arts excellence is earned through patience, consistency and practice.
Confidence Through Achievement
Confidence isn't something children are simply given.
It is built.
Every new technique mastered.
Every form remembered.
Every challenge overcome.
Every belt earned.
Each achievement reinforces one simple belief:
"I can do difficult things if I keep trying."
That confidence doesn't come from being better than someone else.
It comes from becoming better than you were yesterday.
Learning Life Skills Every Week
Every Junior Champions lesson develops qualities that extend far beyond the dojang.
Students learn:
Respect
Discipline
Perseverance
Responsibility
Courtesy
Self-control
Leadership
Teamwork
Goal setting
These are not separate lessons.
They are developed naturally through learning Tang Soo Do.
Every Challenge Builds Character
Learning martial arts isn't always easy.
Sometimes a technique feels difficult.
Sometimes a new pattern takes time to remember.
Sometimes progress feels slow.
These moments are some of the most valuable.
Children begin to understand that mistakes are not failure.
They are simply part of learning.
By working through challenges, students develop resilience, patience and determination—qualities that help them throughout school and life.
Progress That Is Earned
At McKinstry Family Karate, every belt represents genuine achievement.
Students are invited to grade only when they have demonstrated the required standard through:
Regular attendance
Technical competence
Positive attitude
Respect
Consistent effort
Knowledge of the syllabus
Belts are never awarded simply because time has passed.
Every achievement should mean something.
A Positive Community
Junior Champions is much more than a weekly class.
It is a community where children encourage one another, celebrate success together and learn the importance of supporting others.
Many friendships begin on the training mats.
Children quickly discover that martial arts is about helping one another improve—not competing against teammates.
The Journey Shapes the Person
One of the great lessons of Tang Soo Do is that the journey itself changes us.
As children improve their martial arts skills, they also become:
More confident
More resilient
More respectful
More disciplined
More self-controlled
More willing to persevere when things become difficult
We don't separate martial arts from character development.
The martial art is the pathway through which character develops.
As Grandmaster Hwang Kee taught through the philosophy of Moo Duk Kwan, the purpose of training is not simply technical excellence but the development of the individual. The school itself was founded on the ideal of developing people of strong spirit and body, believing that this ultimately strengthens families and communities.
More Than Just a Karate Class
When children join Junior Champions, they are learning genuine traditional Tang Soo Do.
They are learning practical self-defence.
They are improving their fitness.
They are progressing towards their Midnight Blue Belt through commitment and hard work.
But they are also becoming stronger people.
More confident.
More disciplined.
More respectful.
More resilient.
That is why Junior Champions is much more than just a karate class.
It is a journey of personal growth through traditional Tang Soo Do.
Begin the Journey
Our Junior Champions programme is open to children aged 6 years and above.
Every new student begins with a FREE introductory lesson, giving them the opportunity to experience traditional Tang Soo Do in a friendly, welcoming environment.
If they enjoy the experience, the next step is our 6-Week Kickstart Programme, which includes their official Tang Soo Do uniform and introduces them to the exciting journey ahead.
We would love to welcome your child to McKinstry Family Karate and help them discover what they are truly capable of achieving.
Stand Strong. Grow Every Day. Fight for What's Right.
